Eating Thai Style

Traditionally, a Thai dinner is two or more family and/or friends sharing a banquet of dishes communally.

While groups of diners may enjoy sharing a Banquet feast, it is quite normal for two diners to order three dishes in addition to their own serving of rice, three diners four dishes, and so on. Diners choose from a variety of shared dishes and combine the different flavours with steamed jasmine rice.

Thai food is generally not served in courses. All dishes are ordered together and eaten in whatever order they arrive, permitting dinners to enjoy a mix and match of diverse tastes. Soups are enjoyed together with rice and other dishes, not independently as in the manner of European dining. Spicy dishes are balanced by sweet, salty and sour dishes.

The perfect Thai meal is a subtle mix of spicy, sweet, salty and sour which is equally satisfying to eye, nose and palate. A typical meal might include an entrée, soup, a steamed dish, a stir-fry and a spicy salad all served with a variety of sauces. This might be followed by dessert and/or fresh fruit.

There are approximately 40 herbs and spices used in various Thai recipes. Some are included only to add complexity and flavour to a dish and are not to be eaten. Yet some like ginger, coriander and kaffir lime leaf are delicious and an essential ingredient of the dish.

When ordering at Chedi Restaurant, please let our wait staff know if you have any dietary needs or preferences. Even if not listed on the menu; ingredients such as chicken, beef or seafood can be substituted in most dishes and vegetarian or gluten free options can be made to order.
